An injury hampered Solent athletics vice captain Chris Hilton who was hoping to reach the final of the BUCS indoor 3000m.

However, Hilton had to double-back on his goals after his foot injury: “Before, the plan was to get into the final and see what happens, try and win a medal if possible.

In total, 11 Solent University athletes will travel to Sheffield for the BUCS indoor championships.

“Since I got the injury, it’s more to go and have a bit of fun. If I make the final, great, if I don’t, I’ve got an injury, can’t really do anything about it.”

Fellow 3000m runner Damon Lanfear is also apprehensive about his aims in the event: “I’m really nervous.

“The standard is really good, I’m just going to race my own race and try to relax.”

800m runner Kane Lee has had to change his approach to training, and is looking forward to testing himself in the Steel City: “I’ve been training well, I’ve ran a couple of good 400m.

“I’m going to have to see where my endurance hits me for the 800m.”

The indoor championship is the largest gathering of student athletes in the UK, and the next championship takes place from the 14th-16th February 2020.
