Dave Diaper: The Non-League Sir Alex Ferguson
“I’m doing something right, if you get to a level where you are compared to Sir Alex, you are definitely doing something right.”
Dave Diaper has managed over 1000 games for Sholing FC and has a win percentage to better the legendary Scottish manager.
Since Diaper took over in 1999, when the club was known as Vosper Thornycroft, his side has gone from strength to strength winning at every level.
Over the years, 11 major honours have been won under ‘Diapes’ reign.
The most famous moment in their history came in 2014, a day that the Boatmen’s manager will never forget.
“It is definitely my proudest moment, even before the game when i was lined up with the lads on the pitch and the national anthem starts to blare out around the ground.”
“When you win at Wembley, everything else in football will always be second best. That year the cup just seemed to have our name on it from the first round.”
The win was made even more special for Diaper as his son and captain, Marc, lifted the trophy after the tough 1-0 win against West Auckland Town in his final game as a player.
Marc has since, to his Dad’s delight, joined the coaching team.
“It’s great to spend quality time with Marc, he’s the CEO of Gymbox in London so if it wasn’t for football we would not spend a lot of time together which is why it is great to have him as my assistant. It’s a great partnership.”
Sholing’s recent success has recently grabbed the attention of Budweiser who have given a donation of £100,000.
This money is being spent on a new clubhouse to help the club reach that next level off the field in the hope it leads to more success on it.
