Championship side Barnsley await Eastleigh in the FA Cup
Eastleigh could potentially face a lucrative tie against Championship side Barnsley in the FA Cup 3rd Round.
Should they beat League Two side Crewe in an FA Cup 2nd Round replay, they stand to win an extra £50,000.
The 3rd Round will take place between the 4th-6th of January and if Eastleigh’s fixture is scheduled for the Sunday, it will be especially beneficial according to chairman Kenny Amor.
“There will be the prize money for getting through the Second Round.
“We’ve already had it confirmed to us that if our game against Barnsley is on a Sunday we’ll get extended highlights with an over seas broadcaster and that’s worth £50,000 to the club in TV rights alone.
“So it’s massive for us even if it’s perhaps not the draw we would have chosen had we had our personal choice.”
Barnsley are currently bottom in their league having won just two of their first 20 games. Even though the non-league side could have drawn a Premier League team, Amor rates the Spitfires chances.
“Of course making the 3rd Round of the cup we wanted that big Premier League tie.
“But, that being said, arguably a team that is really struggling in the Championship, it’s potentially a winnable game.
If they do defeat Crewe it won’t be the first time Eastleigh have faced Championship opposition in the 3rd Round as they faced Bolton in the 2015/16 season.
They took them to a replay after drawing 1-1 at home but eventually went out 3-2 in the return fixture.
