Claude Puel deserves credit for Leicester’s success says former player

Claude Puel ‘deserves great credit’ for Leicester City’s bright start to the Premier League season, according to former Foxes winger Matt Piper.

Leicester currently sit second in the Premier League following back-to-back home victories over Everton and Watford this week.

Despite being sacked by the club in February 2019, Piper believes Puel has had a key role to play in the club’s success.

“I think Claude [Puel] deserves a lot of credit for assembling the side that Leicester now have.

“Yes, there were some poor signings made, but on the other hand, he brought in the likes of Ricardo [Periera], Madders [James Maddison] and numerous others, you’ve got to give him great credit for that.”

Former Liverpool and Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers succeeded the Frenchman in February and has catapulted the Foxes from the bottom half to the top four.

“I’m not saying Puel is the same calibre of manager as Brendan [Rodgers] because he’s not quite got the same tactical nous, but he assembled a very, very good team for Brendan to take on,” added Piper.

Leicester are now on a seven-game win streak and currently sit eight points behind Premier League leaders, Liverpool with the sides set to meet on Boxing Day.

When asked about whether Leicester are in a ‘title race,’ Rodgers was quick to play down expectation.

“It’s not something we’ve thought about, to be honest.

“We’ve not set any targets and we’re just taking each game as it comes.

“One thing I will say is that we’ve got a fantastic group of players here who have been an absolute pleasure to work with since the day I got here, there’s a lot of potential within this group.”

Leicester will now negotiate fixtures against strugglers Aston Villa and Norwich City, before facing two of their rivals in Manchester City and Liverpool either side of Christmas.
