Solent vice-captain relaxed over 3000m race as medal chances look under threat

Following a foot injury, Solent athletics vice-captain Chris Hilton has realigned his visions for the 3000m race, as the British University and College indoor championships take place in Sheffield.

Team Solent will be taking 11 athletes to the event but Hilton doesn’t rate his chances too highly ahead of the tournament.

“Before the injury had happened the plan was replay to get myself into the final … go into the race and try and win a medal if possible.

“Now my thoughts have changed though, if I make the final great but if I don’t, I have had a bit of an injury so I can’t do much about it.”

Damon Lanfear, who also competes in the 3000m alongside Hilton, is particularly wary of the competition and is apprehensive ahead of the event.

“I’m actually really nervous. It should be interesting to see what happens because the standard out there is really good.”

“I’ll go out there and run my own race though and most importantly try and relax throughout.”

Solent 800m runner Kane Lee has no such injury problems and is relishing running at the championships.

On the other hand, one of Hilton’s teammates Kane Lee – who competes in the 800m, has no such problems to contend with.

“I mean, I’ve been training well. I’ve ran a couple of good 400 metres but I will ultimately just have to see where my endurance takes me for the 800. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The championships are set to feature some of the top young athletes from up and down the UK and it is sure to be a testing event for Solent’s youthful team.
