India top Test cricket rankings

India have won the Test Cricket Championship Trophy for the third successive year.

The Asian side, captained by Virat Kohli, topped the rankings table with 116 points, beating New Zealand to the title by 8.

Kohli’s men were also ahead of South Africa, Australia and England, who finished in the next three positions in that order.

The Indian captain, who was also the top Test run scorer in 2018 with 1,322, was delighted with his player’s achievement.

“Retaining the ICC Test Championship mace once again is something we are all really proud of.

“Our team has been doing well across formats but it gives us extra pleasure to come out on top of the Test rankings.

“We all know of the importance of Test cricket and of how only the best can prosper in the format.”

This will be the last time that the trophy will be handed out to test playing nations.

From next year, the ICC World Test Championship will be put in place in an attempt to add more context to the five-day format of the sport.

The tournament will run from July 2019 to April 2021 and will see the top nine ranked sides compete against one another through a mutual selection of fixtures.

After the two-year period, the best two countries will contest in the ICC World Test Championship, scheduled to take place in June 2021.

And the next competition is something that excites Kohli.

“Our team has a lot of depth and I am sure this will stand us in good stead once the ICC World Test Championship commences later this year.

“That is again something we are really looking forward to as it adds more context to Test match cricket.”
