Women on Course: AUGUSTA 2019

The prestigious Augusta National Golf course will welcome women for the first time this year, as the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur is set to take place this week.

Chairman of the Augusta National and Masters Tournament Fred Ridley, said that,”Receiving an invitation to the competition is  representative of a remarkable amateur career.

“We share in the excitement of the players, not only for what will unfold in April, but also for what their involvement will mean to increasing interest in the women’s game.”

The competition will take place between the 3rd and the 5th April 2019, featuring 72 players from around the world.

It will comprise of 54 holes being played across the three days, with a cut being made after the second round.

However, only the final 30 women will have the reward of playing on the Augusta course, with the first two rounds being played at the Champions Retreat Golf Club.

Who will feature?

Jennifer Kupcho is amongst the favourites for the tournament.

The American is top-ranked in the women’s amateur game, after winning the NCAA title last year and being named the national player of the year.

Also ranked amongst the favourites is fellow American Lucy Li, who remains an amateur player following a one-time warning from the USGA.

She currently holds the record for being the youngest female to qualify for the Women’s US Open, but broke USGA Amateur rules for advertising herself in an Apple Watch advert.
