Fenerbahce condemned after Mikel suffers racist abuse

Former Chelsea and Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel become the target of racial abuse after his side Trabzonspor’s game against Fenerbahçe.

Obi Mikel played the full 90 minutes as his side won 2-1 in the Super Lig on Saturday, with the Nigerian international and his family suffering thousands of racially abusive comments on social media.

Trabzonspor released a statement following the attacks.

“Racism is a refuge for helpless and ignorant people. Our football player, Obi Mikel, condemns the racist attacks after the Fenerbahçe match.

“We present to the public that we have filed a criminal complaint against the attackers”.

Victory meant Trabzonspor jumped above Fenerbahçe and up to third in the league, with the Trabzon based side now only three points off the top of the table with a game in hand.

With Obi Mikel’s teammate Joao Pereira also speaking out against the perpetrators of the attacks.

“It is sad and unacceptable that in 2020 we’re still facing acts of racism and disrespect like this. Football is much bigger than the little people behind these unfortunate acts”.

The abuse of Obi Mikel comes following a spate of racial attacks launched on social media platforms too footballers over the past year, with Manchester United players Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford falling victim in recent times.

Social Media platforms Twitter, Facebook and Instagram all released statements following these incidents.

“People who repeatedly break our guidelines will be permanently banned from using Instagram.

“we’re proactively monitoring the conversation online and will continue taking robust action on any account which violates our rules.

“This is a societal issue and requires a societal response. This is why we maintain a dialogue with both the Professional Footballers’ Association and Kick It Out and are committed to working together to address abusive online and racist behaviour across the industry”.
