5. Who: Riddick Bowe – Former Heavyweight Boxer.
Crime: Kidnapped his wife and five children, forcing them to leave his Maryland home against their will.He also stabbed his wife, Judy, in the chest.It was suspected that his behaviour was altered by a brain injury inflicted by his boxing career.
Punishment: Bowe was captured in Virginia and was later charged with assault and kidnapping. He received 17 months in prison and was released in April 1998.
4. Who: Adam Johnson – Former Football Player.
Crime: Johnson was convicted of sexual activity and grooming of a 15 year old fan in 2016. After exchanging messages over social media, Johnson met with the schoolgirl and signed two football shirts for her, before asking for a kiss in return. He was also accused of pressuring the girl into oral sex, although was not found guilty.
Punishment: Johnson was later charged and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. However, served half of his sentence, resulting in his 2019 release.
3. Who: OJ Simpson – Former American Football Player.
Crime: In 1994, Simpson was accused of murdering his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.
Punishment: Simpson was later acquitted in 1997, but was charged with multiple felonies including burglary, assault, robbery and kidnapping in 2008. He was convicted to 30 years imprisonment.
2. Who: Oscar Pistorius – Former Paralympic Sprinter.
Crime: In February 2013, Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Despite insisting he thought she was an intruder, as she woke to use his bathroom during the night, Pistorius was accused of murder.
Punishment: After a lengthy trial, judge Thokozile Masipa handed Pistorius a verdict of guilty for culpable homicide and not guilty for murder. He was sentenced to 5 years. Many still question this verdict.
1. Who: Aaron Hernandez – Former American Football Player.
Crime: Hernandez was arrested for the murder of ‘friend’ Odin Lloyd. He was later also accused of the double homicide of Safiro Furtado and Daniel De Abreu in 2014.
Punishment: On April 15th, 2015, Hernandez was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He wasn’t however convicted of the two other homicides, despite many believing he was guilty. Just five days later, he was found hanged in his prison cell, his death was ruled as suicide.
