Team Solent athletics vice-captain Chris Hilton says making the final is not a priority.
Chris Hilton is due to take part in the British university and college indoor championships this weekend in Sheffield.
Team Solent will take a total of 11 athletes to compete in the competition where they will face off against some of the best young competitors in the country.
Hilton was aiming at reaching the 3000-metre final but a recent injury to his foot means that he is not optimistic about achieving his goal.
“Before the injury the plan was really to get into the final and then see what happens, go in the race and try to win a medal if possible.
Now it’s just to go and have a bit of fun, if I make the final great but if I don’t, I have had a bit of an injury so I can’t do much about it.”
Fellow 3000-metre runner Damon Lanfear is currently injury free before the trip but he understands the high level he will have to perform at in order to compete.
“I’m really nervous. It should be interesting to see what happens because the standard is really good so I’m just going to go out there, race my own race and relax.”
Kane Lee is going to compete in the 800-metre race in the upcoming event but hopes that he can put all of his training into practice when it is his time to perform.
“I’ve been training well; I mean I have been running a few good 400’s (metres) already but I’m going to have to see where my endurance takes me for the 800.”
