Van Gaal praises “talented” Martial in Manchester United’s win over Southampton

Anthony Martial scored twice for Manchester United, helping his side win 3-2 away at Southampton.

The £36million summer signing, from AS Monaco, continues his perfect Premier League start after scoring on debut in his side’s 3-1 win over rivals Liverpool.

Manager Louis van Gaal has been delighted with the Frenchman’s form thus far.

“I have to say he is doing great. Three matches in a row, he scores three goals, so it is one in one (on average). He has the talent,” said the Dutch manager.

Despite going a goal down to the Saint’s, through Graziano Pelle, United responded through Martial who’s clinical finishing helped guide them to three points.

Van Gaal has a very specific possession based philosophy and Martial has fit perfectly into United’s system according to the 63-year-old.

“He’s adapted to the system, how we want to play. That is also important, because not every player can adapt to that system and he’s shown that he wants to do that and can do that which isn’t easy.”

Although Martial has already started scoring goals, and looks extremely composed when one-on-one with the keeper, he is still only 19-years-old so may have a dip in form.

Van Gaal believes this is to be expected from someone with such talent but still vastly inexperienced.

“When you are 19-years-old you cannot expect consistency. Mostly they shall have a lot of dips, so I also expect that from him, but that’s not a big problem for me,” he said.

Although United eventually won the game, Ronald Koeman’s side did start strong, with both their goals highlighting the oppositions defensive weaknesses.

Van Gaal disagreed with the statement’s about his defence.

“You see our goals against, all the media say our defence is very bad when last season we finished third in this (goal’s against). I think we were good defensively but not in the last 15 minutes.”
